  • Asymptotic Analysis of Eigenvalue-Based Blind Spectrum Sensing Techniques
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP). - 9781479903566 ; , s. 4464-4468
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Herein, we consider asymptotic performance analysis of eigenvalue-based blind Spectrum Sensing (SS) techniques for large-scale Cognitive Radio (CR) networks using Random Matrix Theory (RMT). Different methods such as Scaled Largest Value (SLE), Standard Condition Number (SCN), John's detection and Spherical Test (ST) based detection are considered. The asymptotic sensing bounds for John's detection and ST based detection techniques are derived under a noise only hypothesis for sensing the presence of Primary Users (PUs). These asymptotic bounds are then used as thresholds for the SS decision and their performance is compared with other techniques in terms of probability of correct detection under both hypotheses. It is noted that the SLE detector is the best for a range of scenarios, followed by JD, SCN, ST. Furthermore, it is shown that noise correlation significantly degrades the performance of ST and JD detectors in practical scenarios.

  • Boosting Quantum Battery-Based IoT Gadgets via RF-Enabled Energy Harvesting
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - : MDPI AG. - 1424-8220. ; 22:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The search for a highly portable and efficient supply of energy to run small-scale wireless gadgets has captivated the human race for the past few years. As a part of this quest, the idea of realizing a Quantum battery (QB) seems promising. Like any other practically tractable system, the design of QBs also involve several critical challenges. The main problem in this context is to ensure a lossless environment pertaining to the closed-system design of the QB, which is extremely difficult to realize in practice. Herein, we model and optimize various aspects of a Radio-Frequency (RF) Energy Harvesting (EH)-assisted, QB-enabled Internet-of-Things (IoT) system. Several RF-EH modules (in the form of micro- or nano-meter-sized integrated circuits (ICs)) are placed in parallel at the IoT receiver device, and the overall correspondingly harvested energy helps the involved Quantum sources achieve the so-called quasi-stable state. Concretely, the Quantum sources absorb the energy of photons that are emitted by a photon-emitting device controlled by a micro-controller, which also manages the overall harvested energy from the RF-EH ICs. To investigate the considered framework, we first minimize the total transmit power under the constraints on overall harvested energy and the number of RF-EH ICs at the QB-enabled wireless IoT device. Next, we optimize the number of RF-EH ICs, subject to the constraints on total transmit power and overall harvested energy. Correspondingly, we obtain suitable analytical solutions to the above-mentioned problems, respectively, and also cross-validate them using a non-linear program solver. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is reported in the form of numerical results, which are both theoretical and simulations based, by taking a range of operating system parameters into account.

  • Hybrid Active-and-Passive Relaying Model for 6G-IoT Greencom Networks with SWIPT
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - : MDPI AG. - 1424-8220. ; 21:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to support a massive number of resource-constrained Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices and machine-type devices, it is crucial to design a future beyond 5G/6G wireless networks in an energy-efficient manner while incorporating suitable network coverage expansion methodologies. To this end, this paper proposes a novel two-hop hybrid active-and-passive relaying scheme to facilitate simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) considering both time-switching (TS) and power-splitting (PS) receiver architectures, while dynamically modelling the involved dual-hop time-period (TP) metric. An optimization problem is formulated to jointly optimize the throughput, harvested energy, and transmit power of a SWIPT-enabled system with the proposed hybrid scheme. In this regard, we provide two distinct ways to obtain suitable solutions based on the Lagrange dual technique and Dinkelbach method assisted convex programming, respectively, where both the approaches yield an appreciable solution within polynomial computational time. The experimental results are obtained by directly solving the primal problem using a non-linear optimizer. Our numerical results in terms of weighted utility function show the superior performance of the proposed hybrid scheme over passive repeater-only and active relay-only schemes, while also depicting their individual performance benefits over the corresponding benchmark SWIPT systems with the fixed-TP.

  • Architectures and Synchronization Techniques for Distributed Satellite Systems : A Survey
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2169-3536. ; 10, s. 45375-45409
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cohesive Distributed Satellite Systems (CDSSs) is a key enabling technology for the future of remote sensing and communication missions. However, they have to meet strict synchronization requirements before their use is generalized. When clock or local oscillator signals are generated locally at each of the distributed nodes, achieving exact synchronization in absolute phase, frequency, and time is a complex problem. In addition, satellite systems have significant resource constraints, especially for small satellites, which are envisioned to be part of the future CDSSs. Thus, the development of precise, robust, and resource-efficient synchronization techniques is essential for the advancement of future CDSSs. In this context, this survey aims to summarize and categorize the most relevant results on synchronization techniques for Distributed Satellite Systems (DSSs). First, some important architecture and system concepts are defined. Then, the synchronization methods reported in the literature are reviewed and categorized. This article also provides an extensive list of applications and examples of synchronization techniques for DSSs in addition to the most significant advances in other operations closely related to synchronization, such as inter-satellite ranging and relative position. The survey also provides a discussion on emerging data-driven synchronization techniques based on Machine Learning (ML). Finally, a compilation of current research activities and potential research topics is proposed, identifying problems and open challenges that can be useful for researchers in the field.

  • Universal Intelligent Small Cell (UnISCell) for Next Generation Cellular Networks
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Digital Communications and Networks. - : Elsevier. - 2468-5925 .- 2352-8648. ; 2:4, s. 167-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exploring innovative cellular architectures to achieve enhanced system capacity and good coverage has become a critical issue towards realizing the next generation of wireless communications. In this context, this paper proposes a novel concept of Universal Intelligent Small Cell (UnISCell) for enabling the densification of the next generation of cellular networks. The proposed novel concept envisions an integrated platform of providing a strong linkage between different stakeholders such as street lighting networks, landline telephone networks and future wireless networks, and is universal in nature being independent of the operating frequency bands and traffic types. The main motivating factors for the proposed small cell concept are the need of public infrastructure re-engineering, and the recent advances in several enabling technologies. First, we highlight the main concepts of the proposed UnISCell platform. Subsequently, we present two deployment scenarios for the proposed UnISCell concept considering infrastructure sharing and service sharing as important aspects. We then describe the key future technologies for enabling the proposed UnISCell concept and present a use case example with the help of numerical results. Finally, we conclude this article by providing some interesting future recommendations.

  • Cognitive beamhopping for spectral coexistence of multibeam satellites
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Future Network and MobileSummit 2013 Conference Proceedings. - 9781905824373 ; , s. 6633575-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The usable satellite spectrum is becoming scarce due to continuously increasing demand for broadcast and multimedia services. In this context, we consider the problem of enhancing spectral efficiency in multibeam satellite networks. The spectral coexistence scenario of two multibeam satellites over a common coverage area is studied with a primary satellite having larger beams and a secondary satellite having smaller beams. Furthermore, a novel cognitive beamhopping satellite system is proposed. The system performance of the proposed system is evaluated and compared with that of conventional multibeam and beamhopping systems in terms of system throughput. It is shown that the proposed system significantly enhances the spectral efficiency in comparison to other systems. Moreover, the scenario of the presence of multiple secondary users within an inactive primary beam is considered with power control on the secondary transmission. The system performance is evaluated by considering partial and full frequency sharing approaches. It is noted that the total spectral efficiency increases with the number of secondary users in the full frequency reuse approach.

  • SNR Estimation for Multi-dimensional Cognitive Receiver under Correlated Channel/Noise
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. - 1536-1276 .- 1558-2248. ; 12:12, s. 6392-6405
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In addition to Spectrum Sensing (SS) capability required by a Cognitive Radio (CR), Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) estimation of the primary signals at the CR receiver is crucial in order to adapt its coverage area dynamically using underlay techniques. In practical scenarios, channel and noise may be correlated due to various reasons and SNR estimation techniques with the assumption of white noise and uncorrelated channel may not be suitable for estimating the primary SNR. In this paper, firstly, we study the performance of different eigenvalue-based SS techniques in the presence of channel or/and noise correlation. Secondly, we carry out detailed theoretical analysis of the signal plus noise hypothesis to derive the asymptotic eigenvalue probability distribution function (a.e.p.d.f.) of the received signal's covariance matrix under the following two cases: (i) correlated channel and white noise, and (ii) correlated channel and correlated noise, which is the main contribution of this paper. Finally, an SNR estimation technique based on the derived a.e.p.d.f is proposed in the presence of channel/noise correlation and its performance is evaluated in terms of normalized Mean Square Error (MSE). It is shown that the PU SNR can be reliably estimated when the CR sensing module is aware of the channel/noise correlation.

  • Spectrum Sensing in Dual Polarized Fading Channels for Cognitive SatComs
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Next generation networks are moving towards the convergence of mobile, fixed and broadcasting services in one standard platform, which requires the co-existence of satellite and terrestrial networks in the same spectrum. This framework has motivated the concept of cognitive Satellite Communication (SatComs). In this aspect, the problem of exploiting Spectrum Sensing (SS) techniques for a dual polarized fading channel is considered. In this paper, the performance of Energy Detection (ED) technique is evaluated in the context of a co-existence scenario of a satellite and a terrestrial link. Diversity combining techniques such as Equal Gain Combining (EGC) and Selection Combining (SC) are considered to enhance the SS efficiency. Furthermore, analytical expressions for probability of detection (Pd) and probability of false alarm (Pf ) are presented for these techniques in the considered fading channel and the sensing performance is studied through analytical and simulation results. Moreover, the effect of Cross Polar Discrimination (XPD) on the sensing performance is presented and it is shown that SS efficiency improves for low XPD.

  • Transmit beamforming for spectral coexistence of satellite and terrestrial networks
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2013 8th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks and Communications. ; , s. 275-281
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Herein, we study transmit beamforming techniques in an underlay cognitive mode for the coexistence of satellite and terrestrial networks with the satellite forward link as primary and the terrestrial downlink as secondary. Since geostationary satellite terminals have predetermined propagation characteristics so that they always point towards the geostationary satellite, the interference received by the satellite terminals from the terrestrial Base Station (BS) is confined in an angular sector. Based on this a priori knowledge, we propose transmit beamforming techniques at the BS to maximize the Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) towards the desired Secondary User (SU) and to mitigate the interference towards the primary satellite terminals. Different types of Linearly Constrained Minimum Variance (LCMV) techniques have been proposed for our considered scenario where the exact locations and the number of satellite terminals within a specific angular sector are not known while designing the beamformer. Furthermore, an optimization problem is formulated for maximizing the SU rate and it is shown that the worst case SU rate depends on the Primary User (PU) distance, PU interference threshold and the angular separation of the desired SU from the region of interest.
